The cove of Grand Cul-de-sac is located not far from the district of Lorient.
Sight of the Vitet mount:
T
his cove is particularly
protected. The cliffs advance in the sea and between the two, an islet
protects the cove from the various currents. Grand Cul-de-sac could be
compared with a gigantic natural swimming pool which would miss depth.
Indeed, it is possible to leave the shore and to walk to the
island paying attention to the currents. Because
of such a geographical situation, no yatch is able to come in. Only the fishing boats, the
windsurfs and the scooters can come in this zone.
To reach this site, an
offshore bar was formed during centuries and separates the lagoon from the
ocean. Above, some hotels were built. Thus imprisoned, the lagoon
preserves such a quantity of salt that it was called the Saline (Saltworks).
During the last century, the salt of Saint-Barthélemy was exported to the surrounding islands.
